Are Non-Profit Leaders in Crisis?
The nonprofit sector is facing one of the defining leadership moments of our time.
The latest survey from the Center for Effective Philanthropy offers a sobering snapshot of what it looks like to lead right now amid political pressure, funding instability, and staffing challenges.
While many organizations maintained balanced budgets in 2025, the outlook is less certain. Costs are rising. Revenue is not keeping pace. And leaders are preparing for difficult tradeoffs: drawing on reserves, reducing staff-related expenses, and rethinking how to sustain their work.
At the same time, burnout for staffers across levels and teams remains a real concern, especially among nonprofit leaders themselves: a surprising 90% of leaders are concerned about their own potential for burnout.
But what stands out even more to me isn’t just the external pressures. It’s the expectation and assumption that leaders provide clarity and confidence in the face of it all. Boards are looking for decisive direction. Staff want reassurance. And external stakeholders are wondering if the organization is prepared to continue to thrive - or even survive.
That tension between the need to project confidence in a reality of uncertainty feels like the defining leadership challenge in the nonprofit sector right now.
The report points to important ways funders can help, including by providing more flexible funding, opening up channels of communication, and through greater attention to organizational well-being. All of which feels less like “added support” and more like what’s essential for organizations - and their leaders - to navigate what comes next.
